Anne Terpstra and Mathieu van der Poel have been named Mountain Bikers of the Year 2021. Puck Pieterse and Chris van Dijk were elected Talents of the Year in the same election. The foursome received the corresponding prestigious MTB Award on Tuesday 28 December.

MTB Award Elite Women
Anne Terpstra (30) scored two silver medals at the European Championship in Novi Sad and the World Cup in Val di Sole. In Tokyo, she came to a very nice fifth place at the Olympic Games. The bike star of team Ghost has now shown year after year that she belongs to the world top and in 2021 she again recorded many top ten results in World Cup rounds. Both the jury and the poll were unanimous in naming her mountain biker of the year in the Elite Women category.
MTB Award Elite Men
Close finish for the men! The Award for Mountain Biker of the Year for 2021 goes to Mathieu van der Poel (26). The Alpecin Fenix rider won a short race twice (Albstadt and Nove Mesto) and took seventh and second place respectively in the same World Cup motos. With this, he collected the most votes in the poll and therefore deserves the MTB Award for 2021!
MTB Award Talent Women
Puck Pieterse (19) from Amersfoort is currently triumphing on many fronts. She won the National title on mountain bike and invariably finished in the top three in the 3-Nation Cup. At the World Championships in Val di Sole, she showed what she is capable of with a fantastic second place. Every reason to award the title Mountain Biker of the Year 2021 in the category Talent women to this rider of the Alpecin-Fenix team.
MTB Award Talent Men
In the Talent Men category, Chris van Dijk (19) receives the Award for Mountain Biker of the Year. The rider from the TalentNED team became Dutch champion in Sittard and took a nice seventh place in a well-occupied European Championship in Novi Sad. In addition, he was invariably found at the top of his age category in both national and international competitions. The rider from Ede distinguished himself for the MTB Award Talent-men.
Nominees
Hans Becking, Jeroen van Eck, David Nordemann, Mathieu van der Poel and Milan Vader were nominated in the elite men's category. Among the elite women, these were Sophie von Berswordt, Lotte Koopmans, Anne Tauber, Anne Terpstra and Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado. Pim Ronhaar, Chris van Dijk, Rens Teunissen van Manen, David Haverdings and Tom Schellekens had a chance of winning the title in the Talent men category. Luna Cnossen, Fem van Empel, Rosa van Doorn, Fenna Hougee and Puck Pieterse were the contenders in the Talent women category.
Online poll
As in previous years, Dutch mountain bike enthusiasts could vote for their mountain biker of the year in the four categories via an online poll. In the end, more than a thousand mountain bike enthusiasts cast their votes via the poll. The results of the poll, together with the vote of the jury, determined the final winners.
Online award ceremony
Normally the MTB Awards are always presented in a gathering of all nominees. This was not possible with the current measures, so the committee decided to deliver the Awards to the winners and to report on it digitally.

The Mountainbike Awards
The Mountainbike Awards have been presented annually since 2007 to the best Dutch mountain bikers. This initiative was created at the time by the 'Club van 5', a reflection group that is committed to the development of mountain biking in the Netherlands. The organization of the Mountainbike Awards was adopted a few years ago and taken over by the 'Mountainbike Platform Foundation', which was founded in 2013. This foundation originated from the 'Club of 5' and has the objective of promoting the interests of Dutch mountain bike sport. This foundation houses the first-ever Olympic Mountain Bike Champion Bart Brentjens, former KNWU national coach Leo van Zeeland, ex-international mountain biker Jan Weevers and Alex Schuttert, organizer of 3-Nations MTB cup.
