We are all aware the pandemic is still in full swing. Difficult times have gone by and might be still to come. Within the world of cycling, it’s no different; for organizers and athletes altogether. But the worst part might be behind us!

All though the first races on our schedule have been canceled or postponed, racing at the highest level have continued. We enjoyed watching the pro’s battling during some of the Belgian classics and for example Milan-Sanremo. In the Netherlands, all hope is pinned on a successful outcome during the Amstel Gold Race in the hope that more events can follow.

The Watersley R&D Cycling Team is still waiting for the first race, but some of our girls have already had a few races in their legs. Eline van Rooijen and Ilse Grit have been selected to wear the orange colors of the National Team in both the Healthy Ageing Tour and Omloop van de Westhoek.

The Healthy Ageing Tour for elite women, the first race on Dutch roads that have been held, took place in a modified form as a three-day event from March 10 to 12. The competitions took place on closed circuits, where no public was allowed. Ellen van Dijk was the overall winner and our girls took home with them added experiences, k’s in the legs, and a good motivation to build on. Some band-aids were needed but overall, it’s the beginning of a new season, with plenty more to come! On the 21st of March, the Omloop van de Westhoek resulted in 56th place in the end for Eline. For Ilse, the day resulted in an overnight stay at the hospital. Luckily without too much damage and recovery is going well. It was a tough race that contributes to a solid foundation to grow into the races to come.
